Indian regime imposes two-month VPN ban in Udhampur as digital suppression of Kashmiris continues

The Indian regime has imposed a two-month ban on the use of virtual private networks across Udhampur district, with the order citing security grounds. The ban adds Udhampur to a rotating list of districts across Indian-controlled Kashmir where VPN access has been periodically restricted, suspended, or blocked throughout 2026 as the Indian regime seeks to tighten its control over the digital information environment available to Kashmiris.

VPNs are used by Kashmiris to access independent news, communicate securely, document the occupation's conduct, and circumvent the Indian regime's throttling and blocking of platforms and content it finds inconvenient. The Indian regime has already rendered Indian-controlled Kashmir one of the most restricted information environments on earth through accreditation controls, journalist arrests, and media pressure. VPN bans extend that control into the last digital spaces where Kashmiris can access information and communicate beyond the occupation's surveillance reach. Udhampur's two-month ban is not a security measure. It is censorship.
