Apni Party president Altaf Bukhari has lashed out at PDP chief Mehbooba Mufti following her remarks comparing protesters at Jantar Mantar in Delhi with protesters in Kashmir, in which she stated that in Kashmir there is militancy, implying that protesters there faced consequences because of it. Bukhari states the characterisation amounts to labelling Kashmiri protesters as militants and represents a deeply unfortunate reflection of the mindset Mufti displayed while in power. He cited her infamous statement justifying the killing of Kashmiri children by asking whether they had come out to fetch milk and toffee.

Kashmir Conflict states what this exchange actually represents. Altaf Bukhari is correct that Mehbooba Mufti's remarks are indefensible. They are also consistent with her documented record in government, during which pellet guns blinded hundreds of Kashmiri protesters and her administration provided the Indian regime with the political cover to do so. But Altaf Bukhari is himself a figure who has governed within the Indian regime's structures, facilitated its administration of the occupation, and contributed to the legitimising framework that made these policies possible. His criticism of Mufti is accurate. His credibility as its author is limited. These are collaborators settling scores over who collaborated less visibly. The Kashmiri protesters who were blinded were not failed by one of them. They were failed by the entire installed political class both represent.
