Armed Forces Tribunal gives Brigadier a formal disapproval note for torturing three Kashmiris to death. That is the accountability.

The Armed Forces Tribunal has upheld a severe displeasure award against Brigadier P Acharya of the 13 Sector Rashtriya Rifles, who commanded the unit under whose authority three Kashmiri civilians died during interrogation following a terrorist ambush in Poonch in December 2023. The Tribunal found that Acharya had directed a company commander to employ slightly harsh methods during interrogation, had himself assaulted a suspect, and had failed to prevent officers under his command from using unlawful force. Three Kashmiri civilians died as a result.

The Tribunal acknowledged that the troops had lost colleagues in a brutal ambush, noting that emotions of revenge are quite natural, before ruling that human emotions must yield to military discipline.

The Brigadier was not prosecuted for murder. He was not court-martialled. He received a notation. He challenged even that in court and lost. AFSPA ensures that mark is the ceiling of accountability, not its floor. The Indian regime alleges its forces are bound by the Geneva Conventions.
