Five killed as vehicle plunges into Chenab in Kishtwar as missing guardrails on accident-prone roads claim more Kashmiri lives

Five people were killed when their vehicle plunged into the Chenab River in Kishtwar district on 15 August 2026. The vehicle fell from a road above the river. Rescue operations were launched by Indian forces personnel and local responders. Unelected Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha issued a condolence statement.
The Kishtwar district roads running alongside the Chenab are among the most consistently dangerous in the entire Jammu region. They are narrow, elevated, and prone to falls at multiple documented locations along the river corridor. The absence of guardrails, crash barriers, and adequate road safety infrastructure along these routes is a long-standing and repeatedly flagged concern that successive administrations have failed to address.
The Indian regime marks 15 August by hoisting flags and projecting images of a developing, integrated Kashmir. On the same day, five Kashmiris are dead in the Chenab because a road that should have had a barrier did not. The infrastructure that would have saved them was never built because it was never prioritised. Roads in Indian-controlled Kashmir are built for the occupation's movement. The Kashmiris who live alongside them take their chances.
