Floods devastate Indian-controlled Kashmir as India's development myth is washed away

Severe flooding has caused widespread devastation across multiple districts of Indian-controlled Kashmir, inundating homes, destroying roads, cutting off communities, and displacing families across the territory. The scale of damage has once again exposed the gap between the Indian regime's sustained narrative of development and transformation in Kashmir and the ground reality experienced by ordinary Kashmiris.
The Indian regime has spent years presenting its infrastructure investment in Kashmir as evidence of progress and normalisation. Roads have been built, tunnels inaugurated, and projects announced with considerable fanfare. What the floods have revealed, as they reveal every year, is which communities that infrastructure actually serves. Military supply routes and cantonment connectivity have been prioritised across decades of Indian regime construction in Kashmir. Civilian flood defences, drainage systems, early warning infrastructure, and the maintenance of natural water channels whose destruction has been accelerated by military construction and demographic restructuring across the territory have not.
Kashmiri homes are underwater. Kashmiri families have been displaced. The roads connecting Indian forces positions are engineered to withstand the terrain. The homes of the Kashmiris living alongside them are not. That distinction is not accidental. It is the precise expression of whose welfare the Indian regime's development in Kashmir has always been designed to serve.
