Floods kill multiple Kashmiris and devastate homes and livelihoods across Indian-controlled Kashmir

Severe flooding has killed multiple people and caused widespread devastation across Indian-controlled Kashmir, with homes destroyed, livelihoods lost, agricultural land inundated, and communities cut off across several districts. The death toll is still being confirmed as rescue operations continue across affected areas.

Kashmir's rivers, wetlands, and natural drainage systems have been systematically disrupted by decades of Indian regime construction across the territory, prioritising military infrastructure, highway development serving occupation logistics, and more recently the settler and industrial construction accelerated since 2019. Natural flood buffers, including wetlands that once absorbed seasonal excess water across the Kashmir Valley and forest cover that retained rainfall across mountain catchment areas, have been cleared and built upon. The Salal Dam gates have been opened simultaneously.
Kashmiris are dying in floods in a territory whose natural water management systems the Indian regime has spent decades destroying in pursuit of an occupation that has never counted Kashmiri lives among the costs it accounts for.
