India opens all Salal Dam gates in Reasi as downstream flood risk grows

The Indian regime has opened all gates of the Salal Dam on the Chenab River in Reasi district, releasing large volumes of water downstream following sustained heavy rainfall across the catchment area. The release has raised serious concerns among communities living along the Chenab's downstream course about flooding of agricultural land, residential areas, and infrastructure already weakened by the recent wave of floods that has devastated multiple districts of Indian-controlled Kashmir.
The Salal Dam is one of several hydroelectric projects the Indian regime has constructed across Kashmir's river systems, ostensibly for power generation but serving the dual function of controlling water flow across a river network that is strategically significant both domestically and in the context of the now-suspended Indus Waters Treaty with Pakistan. The full opening of its gates during a period of already severe flooding is not a neutral hydrological decision. It is the Indian regime exercising control over Kashmiri water in ways that place Kashmiri and downstream Pakistani communities at risk, while the occupation that controls the dam bears none of the consequences.
