Indian man from Agra caught impersonating CRPF officer on Baltal Yatra route as the two-tier movement system in Kashmir is laid bare

An Indian national, Harvinder Kumar, a resident of Agra in Uttar Pradesh, was apprehended at the Domail Gate on the Baltal route to the Amarnath cave shrine on 27 July 2026 while wearing a CRPF uniform and carrying a fabricated CRPF identity card. He has been handed to police for investigation into his motives.
The question worth examining is not just what Kumar intended. It is how he got as far as he did. The Amarnath Yatra security apparatus involves 670 paramilitary companies, NSG commandos, AI facial recognition, biometric verification, and checkpoint infrastructure across every access route. Yet an Indian man from Uttar Pradesh in a fake uniform with a fake identity card moved through multiple layers of that apparatus before being stopped.
The answer is structural. Indian nationals moving through Indian-controlled Kashmir are not subjected to the same scrutiny as Kashmiri civilians. Kashmiris are stopped, searched, frisked, and questioned at every checkpoint as a matter of routine. Indian nationals, particularly those visibly associated with the Yatra or dressed in any way consistent with authority, move with a presumption of legitimacy that Kashmiris are never afforded. Kumar exploited that asymmetry. He got further than any Kashmiri carrying legitimate documents would have in the same situation. The two-tier movement system in Indian-controlled Kashmir is not incidental. It is structural. Kumar's arrest has inadvertently confirmed it.
