21 shops gutted in Kupwara fire as traders cite poor infrastructure and possible arson amid worsening pattern

Twenty-one shops were destroyed in a fire that broke out in the Sogam area of Kupwara district on 11 September 2026, causing heavy losses to traders whose stock, equipment, and commercial premises were reduced to ash. Traders state the fire spread rapidly due to the absence of adequate firefighting infrastructure in the area and are calling for compensation and an independent investigation into the cause.
