Indian regime demolishes 20 Jammu shops, some operating for 50 years, without prior notice as livelihoods are erased

Jammu Municipal Corporation demolished over 20 shops at Satwari Chowk in Jammu city on 9 September 2026, citing anti-encroachment grounds. Shopkeepers state they received no prior notice before the demolition teams arrived. Several of the demolished shops had been operating at the same location for approximately fifty years, with families having built their livelihoods and communities around them across generations. The shopkeepers have demanded compensation and accountability.
