Indian regime seizes properties of five Kashmiris under UAPA and two more under NDPS in latest wave of dispossession

The Indian regime has attached the properties of five Kashmiris based outside Indian-controlled Kashmir under the Unlawful Activities Prevention Act, alleging their connection to armed resistance activity. The five individuals are based in Pakistan, and their properties within Indian-controlled Kashmir have been seized without any judicial determination of guilt, on the basis of NIA and police allegations alone. In separate actions, two further properties worth approximately 1.05 crore rupees (£81,900) have been attached in Srinagar under the NDPS Act.
The UAPA attachment of properties belonging to Kashmiris living outside India extends the Indian regime's reach beyond its own jurisdiction. It cannot imprison the individuals it targets. It can take their families' homes. That is the instrument being used here: the seizure of property inside Kashmir as punishment for resistance activity conducted outside it, with the family members who remain in Kashmir bearing the material consequences of a legal action brought against someone else.
The Nasha Mukt Abhiyaan and the UAPA property attachment programme are two channels of the same dispossession project. Combined, they have now stripped Kashmiri families of properties worth hundreds of crore rupees across Indian-controlled Kashmir since 2019, without a court first determining that a single one of those families deserved to lose what was taken from them.
