Indian regime tightens control over Jammu-Srinagar highway ahead of forced 15 August celebrations

The Indian regime has imposed intensified security arrangements along the Jammu-Srinagar National Highway in the days preceding 15 August 2026, with additional checkpoints, vehicle searches, convoy restrictions, and forces personnel deployed at strategic points along the route. Movement for Kashmiri civilians has been further complicated as the highway's already heavily militarised corridor becomes subject to additional layers of control timed around an occasion Kashmiris do not observe willingly.
The highway is the primary artery connecting the Kashmir Valley to the rest of India. Its militarisation is permanent. Its further tightening around Independence Day is routine. The Indian regime requires Kashmir to appear stable, celebratory, and integrated on 15 August. Achieving that appearance requires locking down the roads, restricting civilian movement, flooding the territory with additional forces, and processing any expression of dissent before it can become visible. The highway tightening is one component of that annual management exercise.
