Video footage has emerged showing Indian Amarnath Yatra pilgrims attempting to coerce Kashmiri children selling fruit by a roadside into chanting "Bharat Mata ki Jai" and other Hindu nationalist slogans while holding out money as a bribe. The children refused, trying to move away from the camera. The pilgrims persisted regardless, filming the children without consent and continuing to push money toward them in an attempt to purchase the performance they wanted.
Kashmir Conflict states what this footage documents beyond its immediate content. It is not a single individual's behaviour. It is the expression of an entitlement cultivated over an entire Yatra season in which Indian pilgrims have moved through Kashmiri land under the protection of 670 paramilitary companies, filmed Kashmiri women and girls without consent, left waste across Kashmiri public spaces, physically assaulted Kashmiris in at least one documented incident, and chanted communal slogans at Muslim residents of the territory they are passing through.
Children selling fruit by a roadside. The pilgrims want them to perform Indian nationalism for the camera. The children want to be left alone. The occupation makes sure the pilgrims get what they want and the children have no power to refuse beyond the quiet dignity they showed. That quiet refusal is Kashmiri. The brazen entitlement confronting it is what the Indian regime has imported.
