Kashmiri convicted of mosque killing sentenced to life imprisonment as Indian regime uses case to push its standard narrative

Ghulam Mohi-ud-Din Dar, 60, a resident of Dalgate, Srinagar, has been sentenced to life imprisonment by a Srinagar sessions court for the murder of Abdul Gani Dar, alias Abdullah Gazali, 78, the former chief of the Tehreek-ul-Mujahideen organisation, inside a Jamiat-e-Ahli Hadith mosque in Gawkadal on 13 February 2020. The court imposed a fine of 50,000 rupees (£3,900) and directed 7 lakh rupees (£54,600) in compensation to the victim's family.
Dar had previously been a member of the armed resistance through the TuM organisation. The conviction relates to the murder of a figure who was himself a former resistance leader, inside a mosque, six years ago.
The Indian regime has used the conviction to reinforce its standard narrative on Kashmir. Kashmir Conflict notes that the case is a criminal prosecution, and the court has produced a verdict through its own proceedings. What is equally documented is that the Indian regime's judicial system in Indian-controlled Kashmir is the same system that has imprisoned thousands of Kashmiris without charge, denied bail to political prisoners for years, and been used consistently as an instrument of political persecution. Its verdicts do not exist in isolation from that record.
