Kashmiri resistance organisations call for Black Day on 15 August as they have done since India first occupied Kashmir

Kashmiri resistance organisations, political groups, and Hurriyat leadership have called for the observance of 15 August 2026 as a Black Day across Indian-controlled Kashmir and among the diaspora worldwide, as they have consistently done since India's occupation of Kashmir began in 1947.
15 August is not a day Kashmiris chose to be part of. The accession of the former princely state of Jammu and Kashmir to India was conducted without any plebiscite, without the consent of its people, and under circumstances that have been disputed, contested, and resisted ever since. The Indian regime marks the date as a celebration of national independence. Kashmiris mark it as the beginning of an occupation that has never been resolved and has never been accepted.
The call for a Black Day shutdown is not a recent political tactic. It is a position held with documented consistency across nearly eighty years. The resistance observes 15 August the same way it has always observed it: as a reminder of what was imposed on Kashmir without its consent, and what continues to be imposed on it today.
