Kashmiris across Indian-controlled Kashmir, Azad Jammu and Kashmir, in exile and the global diaspora have marked the fifth anniversary of the martyrdom of Syed Ali Shah Geelani on 1 September 2026, with seminars, prayers, and commemorations held from Muzaffarabad to London and beyond. A seminar in Muzaffarabad paid rich tribute to the veteran Hurriyat leader who spent decades imprisoned, placed under prolonged house arrest, and subjected to every instrument of suppression the Indian regime could deploy, and who refused, until his final breath, to accept any settlement short of the Kashmiri people's full and internationally recognised right to self-determination.

Geelani died on 1 September 2021. The Indian regime denied him a dignified farewell, burying him under military guard in the dead of night to prevent Kashmiris from gathering to mourn him publicly. Five years on, they are gathering anyway, across every city and country where Kashmiris live. The Indian regime could control his burial. It cannot control his memory. It never will
