Khurram Parvez and Irfan Mehraj released after years of wrongful imprisonment as Kashmiris watch and wait

Kashmiri human rights activist Khurram Parvez and journalist Irfan Mehraj have been released following bail grants issued in recent days, with Parvez having been imprisoned since 2021 and Mehraj since 2023, both detained under the UAPA in the wave of political imprisonments that followed the Indian regime's full annexation of Kashmir in 2019.
Kashmir Conflict does not celebrate bail grants in Indian-controlled Kashmir prematurely. The pattern is documented and consistent: bail is granted, families begin to hope, and days or weeks later the Indian regime fabricates new charges under draconian legislation to return the individual to custody before they reach their front door. That pattern is precisely why no one celebrated when the bail orders were announced. The relief comes only when the person is home.
Both men are now released. Kashmiris pray they are not rearrested once they reach their families.
Khurram Parvez spent years meticulously documenting the Indian regime's war crimes in Indian-controlled Kashmir, building an evidentiary record the Indian regime found intolerable. Irfan Mehraj reported the truth about the occupation in a media environment the Indian regime has systematically destroyed. The Indian regime imprisoned both men not for crimes but for doing exactly what it fears most: making the record of what it does in Kashmir impossible to erase.
