The death of a minor girl under suspicious circumstances sparked widespread protests and a complete shutdown across parts of Kishtwar district. Police arrested two individuals, including a government school headmaster, Khalid Hussain of Gorinall Chatroo, and his brother Tariq Hussain, in connection with the case. According to the FIR, the minor was subjected to sexual assault by the headmaster, subsequently became pregnant, and was administered medication allegedly intended to terminate the pregnancy as part of a conspiracy involving the accused. She subsequently died. A stillbirth was also recorded.

Protests erupted across Chatroo, Mughal Maidan, and Kishtwar town. A complete shutdown was observed across multiple areas. Hundreds took to the streets demanding transparent, impartial, and time-bound investigation and stringent punishment for those found responsible.

Kashmir Conflict states what this case represents beyond its immediate facts. A Kashmiri child was raped by her teacher, made pregnant, given drugs to conceal what had been done to her, and died. The case joins a documented and worsening pattern of sexual violence against Kashmiri girls and women across the territory, inflicted not only by Indian forces and Indian nationals but now by individuals within Kashmiri institutional spaces whose moral framework has been corroded by decades of occupation and the normalisation of violence that occupation produces. The immorality imported into Kashmir over decades of Indian rule does not arrive only in the form of Indian pilgrims and settlers. It seeps into institutions, corrupts individuals, and destroys children. Kishtwar is protesting today because a community recognises what has been done to one of its daughters. The investigation must be independent. The accountability must be real.
