Mirwaiz placed under house arrest again and barred from Jama Masjid as Indian regime continues to punish even its most accommodating Kashmiri voices

Mirwaiz Umar Farooq has been placed under de facto house arrest once again and barred from leading Friday Jumuah prayers at the historic Jama Masjid in Srinagar. The Indian regime has provided no publicly stated justification for the restriction.

The Mirwaiz has spent the period since his release from years of house arrest carefully calibrating his public position to avoid direct confrontation with the Indian regime. He has called for dialogue. He has avoided naming the occupation directly. He has framed his statements in the language of peace and constitutional rights rather than resistance. He was placed under house arrest again regardless.

The question the Indian regime's action answers is the same one it always answers. There is no level of accommodation, restraint, or moderation that guarantees a Kashmiri voice freedom of movement and expression in Indian-controlled Kashmir. The Mirwaiz called for the restoration of Article 370. The Indian regime closed his mosque. The message to every Kashmiri is consistent: there are no safe words. There is only silence or detention. The Mirwaiz chose not to be silent. The Indian regime chose, as it always does, to respond with force rather than dialogue.
