Power tariffs hiked and free unit promise scrapped in Kashmir as Indian regime squeezes a population it alleges it is developing

Protests erupted in Jammu on 25 August 2026 as the PDP led demonstrations against electricity tariff hikes across Indian-controlled Kashmir, condemning the scrapping of a promised scheme providing 200 free units of power to economically vulnerable households, replaced instead with a price increase that will hit the poorest families hardest.
Installed Chief Minister Omar Abdullah attempted to distance himself from the decision publicly. Kashmir Conflict states plainly that this deflection is meaningless. The Indian regime controls every significant economic lever in Indian-controlled Kashmir. The unelected Lieutenant Governor, not the Chief Minister, holds executive authority over the territory's administration. Electricity policy is determined within a framework the Indian regime sets. The scrapping of free units for poor Kashmiris and the hiking of tariffs for a population already crippled by occupation-era economic stagnation is not a local administrative oversight. It is the continuation of a policy of deliberate economic hardship directed at a population the Indian regime alleges it governs in the interest of development and prosperity. Kashmir once supplied its own needs. The occupation has ensured it can no longer do so.
