RSS Chief Mohan Bhagwat flees through hotel side entrance as Kashmir and human rights activists confront him in London

Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh chief Mohan Bhagwat attended a private gathering at the Bentley Hotel on Gloucester Road in Kensington, London, on Monday evening, as part of the RSS's centenary-year overseas programme. Word of the event reached diaspora activists with approximately one hour's notice. Despite the short window, a dedicated group assembled outside the hotel, led by The Kashmir Centre and Hindus for Human Rights, demonstrating against the visit of the head of an organisation the Indian government itself banned three times and which carries a documented history of anti-minority mobilisation and communal violence across India.
Bhagwat did not leave through the front entrance. He was escorted out through an unused side exit. Attendees exited through the service entrance. Those inside fled the building rather than face the activists outside.
Kashmir Conflict notes what the method of departure states plainly. The head of one of India's most powerful political organisations, touring Britain on a programme framed as community outreach and civilisational dialogue, left through a side door in the dark to avoid a handful of protesters chanting Azaadi outside.
Of equal concern is the reported presence of armed British police officers flanking Bhagwat during his attendance. The Kashmir Centre had submitted formal representations to the Home Secretary, the Metropolitan Police Commissioner, and the National Police Chiefs' Council asking for an assessment of whether Bhagwat's presence was conducive to the public good. The British state responded by providing him with armed protection. That decision warrants a direct and public explanation from the Home Office. Why was the RSS chief given state security protocol in London?
Indian intelligence-linked individuals were observed filming the activists outside the hotel alongside RSS-affiliated attendees. Kashmiris chanting for their freedom in London were filmed by the same apparatus that surveils them in Indian-controlled Kashmir. The geography changes. The surveillance does not.
