THIRTY-SEVEN YEARS SINCE OPERATION MASJID. THE MOSQUE STILL STANDS. OCCUPATION HAS NOT SILENCED IT.

On this day in 1989, Indian forces conducted what became known as Operation Jamia Masjid, violating the sanctity of the historic Jama Masjid in Srinagar, detaining worshippers, and desecrating the sacred space in one of the earliest and most significant acts of the Indian regime's assault on Kashmiri religious life. The Mirwaiz Umar Farooq states that the scars of that day remain, that the mosque has stood through assaults, sieges, closures, and repeated attempts to silence its pulpit across thirty-seven years, and that it continues to stand as Kashmir's spiritual heart, a witness to its history, and a voice for the faith, dignity, and rights of its people.

Kashmir Conflict records this anniversary with the weight it deserves. The Jama Masjid has been repeatedly sealed since 2019, its Friday prayers periodically banned, and its pulpit placed under effective state control. The Mirwaiz who leads it has been placed under house arrest on dozens of occasions. Thirty-seven years of sustained effort to silence this mosque and this pulpit have not succeeded. That is the most honest tribute to those detained within its walls in 1989 that the present moment can offer.
