US Ambassador calls Kashmir "an important part of India" as Pakistan summons US diplomat and Kashmiris worldwide reject the statement

US Ambassador to India Sergio Gor, also serving as Trump's Special Envoy for South and Central Asian Affairs, described Jammu and Kashmir as "an important part of India" during a joint media briefing with installed Chief Minister Omar Abdullah in Srinagar on 19 August 2026, his first official visit to Indian-controlled Kashmir. Pakistan's Ministry of Foreign Affairs summoned the US Charge d'Affaires in Islamabad and lodged a strong demarche, calling the statement irresponsible and factually incorrect. Islamabad questioned whether Gor's remarks were consistent with Washington's long-standing position on Kashmir and its stated commitment to international law and UN Security Council resolutions
Kashmir Conflict states what this visit and this statement represent with complete clarity. Kashmir is not an important part of India. It is a disputed and occupied territory whose final status has never been determined, whose people have never been consulted through any plebiscite, and whose right to self-determination has been affirmed by the very UN Security Council resolutions that Pakistan rightly invoked in its demarche. No American ambassador's tourist commentary changes any of that. But the statement was not a slip. It was a political declaration, made deliberately, beside an installed Chief Minister, in a territory the US now appears willing to treat as settled Indian sovereign ground.
The timing requires examination. It was India that ran to the United States to broker a ceasefire following its military offensive against Pakistan in May 2025, an operation the Indian regime initiated and was unable to conclude on its own terms. Trump himself stated he brokered the ceasefire, a claim New Delhi rejected publicly and repeatedly. The US delivered India a lifeline in May 2025. India is now being delivered Kashmir's status in August 2026. That is a transaction, not a foreign policy position.
The ULC has directly linked Gor's visit to a documented India-Israel joint military project in the Yousmarg area of Indian-controlled Kashmir. The US, India, and Israel maintain deep and expanding security, intelligence, and weapons cooperation. A US Special Envoy for South and Central Asia visiting Kashmir days after that connection is publicly raised, meeting only the Indian regime's installed administrators and no representative of the Kashmiri people, is not a diplomatic courtesy call. It is the United States signalling its alignment in a regional security architecture that has no space for Kashmiri self-determination and every interest in treating Kashmir as a stabilised Indian asset for the purposes of countering Iran and China.
Kashmiris worldwide have rejected Gor's statement. They did not need a US ambassador to tell them what Kashmir is. They have known for nearly eighty years what it is, what has been done to it, and by whom. Kashmir is not an important part of India. It is an occupied people's homeland. That will remain true regardless of what Sergio Gor says standing next to Omar Abdullah in Srinagar.
